Chamber Music Hamilton was established in the year 2000 by Zdenek and Lida Konicek, continuing a long tradition of bringing some of the world’s best chamber music ensembles to Hamilton. Before that, many well known chamber groups had performed in the Hamilton home of Helen Cappadocia and her late husband, Professor Ezio Cappadocia. With the founding of Chamber Music Hamilton the concerts moved to the Recital Hall of the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts on James St. South in Hamilton. After the Koniceks' return to the Czech Republic in 2005, Sabatino Vacca became the Artistic Director, a position he held until the spring of 2009. Since that time the Artistic Directors have been Abigail (Abby) Richardson-Schulte and Michael Schulte, who have signed up the distinguished ensembles making up the 2011-2012 concert season. A feature of our concerts enjoyed by many is the opportunity to mix with the performers and members of the audience after the concert while enjoying wine and cheese, coffee, fruit and sandwiches. The musicians often say how much they enjoy these occasions. Chamber Music Hamilton is grateful to the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Hamilton for generous financial support. It is also grateful to many individual donors whose contributions help to make the ticket prices affordable.

About our Artistic Directors

Michael Schulte

Michael Schulte has been described as "This elegantly accomplished violinist [with] smooth virtuosity", by Hamilton music critic Hugh Fraser. Pursuing his early love of orchestral music, he held the position of concertmaster with nine different orchestras. Also a violist and conductor, his main focus is now on chamber music, and he is the director of the award-winning Schulte Strings. Michael has performed with many of this country's finest musicians and has coached and conducted at the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute for over 15 years. Michael has performed or conducted much of Abigail's music for CBC radio broadcast.

Abigail Richardson-Schulte

Abigail Richardson-Schulte is an acclaimed Canadian composer. After receiving her doctorate from the University of Toronto, she held the position of Affiliate Composer with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 2006-2009. She has won many awards including top prize at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers with resulting broadcasts of her music in over 35 countries. Her opera "Sanctuary Song" recently won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for "Best New Opera". Abigail's music has been commissioned by the CBC, Radio France (for the Castagneri Quartet), presenters, performers and major orchestras across the country.
